PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers women’s basketball standout Cappie Pondexter was named the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday afternoon. It marks the second straight week the Phoenix Mercury guard has earned the accolade from the league.
Pondexter grabbed the fourth Player of the Week award of her career after averaging 19.5 points and seven assists in a pair of wins. In doing so, she helped the Mercury retain first place in the Western Conference.
On the road at Sacramento, Pondexter scored a team-best 23 points. In addition, she had eight assists with the last one coming on Temeka Johnson’s game-winning buzzer beater. Pondexter followed that effort with a 16-point, six assist performance versus the Chicago Sky on July 8.
Pondexter currently ranks second (20.4 ppg) in the WNBA in scoring, only 0.2 points behind teammate Diana Taurasi, and is fourth in assists (5.1 apg).
Pondexter, a two-time WNBA All-Star, a gold-medalist with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team and the 2007 WNBA Finals MVP, is one of the most decorated players in Rutgers women’s basketball history. The 2006 BIG EAST Player of the Year and First Team All-American selection led Rutgers to four NCAA appearances and a perfect 16-0 league record her senior season.
Last week, Pondexter shared Player of the Week honors with former Scarlet Knight Tammy Sutton-Brown. The Indiana Fever center was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
