PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rutgers junior punter Teddy Dellaganna (Templeton, Calif.) was named BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. It marked the second time in Dellaganna's career he earned the weekly honor.
In addition, junior linebacker Antonio Lowery (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore running back Joe Martinek (Hopatcong, N.J.) were named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll.
All three players played vital roles in Rutgers' 34-13 victory at Maryland on Saturday.
Dellaganna averaged 40.6 yards on five punts, forcing three Terrapin drives to start inside the 12-yard line and hitting a 51-yard punt from deep inside Rutgers territory to help protect a fourth-quarter lead.
For the second consecutive game, Martinek recorded a career-high rushing as he rolled to his second 100-yard performance in as many games. Martinek rushed for a career-high 147 yards on 19 carries (7.7 yards per carry average) and tied a career-best with two touchdowns, including a 61-yard run to ice the game in the fourth quarter.
Martinek rushed for 130 yards on 10 carries, including both touchdowns, in the final 15 minutes of play vs. the Terps.
He became the first Scarlet Knight to run for 100 yards in two straight games since Ray Rice closed out the 2007 season with back-to-back 100-yard performances. Martinek is fifth in the BIG EAST with 90 rushing yards per game.
The first offensive play of the game set the tone for Rutgers' defense Saturday as Lowery picked off Maryland QB Chris Turner and returned the pick 36 yards for a touchdown. In all, Rutgers forced five turnovers and held the Terps to 28 yards rushing in the 21-point victory.
Lowery's first career INT led to the Miami native's first career TD as well.
In his first year as a starter at WLB, Lowery led Rutgers with eight tackles on the day vs. the Terps. He also recorded one tackle for loss.
Rutgers returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10 vs. Texas Southern at Rutgers Stadium.
