PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 14, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team hits the road for the first time in 2010 as the Scarlet Knights travel to Raleigh, N.C. for a 7:00 p.m. meet with NC State this Friday inside Reynolds Coliseum.
RU dropped a 189.725-188.925 decision at home to New Hampshire in the season opener last Saturday. Despite the setback, the Scarlet Knights received solid performances from their senior leaders Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) and Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) on the vault and a strong showing from junior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) with a 9.725 in the floor exercise to place third overall in the event.
The freshman trio of Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) were major contributors for the Scarlet Knights in their first collegiate meet. Romano and Zito competed in the all-around while Trentacosti led all Scarlet Knights on the balance beam. Romano and Zito paced RU on the uneven parallel bars.
Friday marks NC State’s season opener. The Wolfpack, under the direction of 30-year head coach Mark Stevenson, captured the EAGL Championship last year and return 22 starting routines from a year ago. NC State totaled 19 victories last season and posted a mark of 16-1 at Reynolds Coliseum in 2009.
While both schools have competed at the EAGL Championships, Rutgers and NC State have not faced each other in the regular season since 2007 when the Scarlet Knights defeated the Wolfpack, 191.800-191.575.
