Sevarino Guides Rutgers Gymnastics To Victory Over Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (January 23, 2010) – Senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) took first place in the floor exercise and the vault en route to a career-best 38.625 in the all-around to guide the Rutgers gymnastics team to its first victory of the season with a 190.725 – 185.100 win over the University of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon inside Hutchinson Gymnasium.
Rutgers took the top five spots in the vault, led by Sevarino’s 9.700. Fellow senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) took second place with a 9.600, while Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) was third with a 9.525. Freshmen Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) finished fourth and fifth in the event with scores of 9.475 and 9.450, respectively.
Sevarino continued her strong performance on the day with a career-high 9.825 to capture the title in the floor exercise. Banfield placed second with a 9.725, while Zito finished fourth with a 9.600. Romano finished sixth in the event with a 9.550 and Lewandowski was seventh with a 9.500.
Zito and fellow freshman Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) tied Penn’s Jenny Hurst for top honors on the beam with a 9.725. Sevarino was right behind with a 9.700 to place fourth, while sophomore Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.) posted a 9.650 to place fifth in the event.
Zito led all the Scarlet Knights with a second-place finish on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.550, just behind Penn’s Elise Bowe, who took first place with a 9.575.
Sevarino’s career-high 38.625 was tops among the all-around competitors, ahead of Zito (38.325) and Romano (37.475).
Senior Prishani Seebadri (Wenonah, N.J.), who has been sidelined for nearly a year with a leg injury, performed for the first time in an exhibition event in Saturday’s meet as she continues her recovery. Seebadri is expected to compete for the Scarlet Knights later this season.
The Scarlet Knights will compete in their second home meet of the season next Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. against Temple inside the Livingston Recreation Center. Scarletknights.com will provide a live broadcast of the meet through KnightVision Broadband.
