Rutgers Gymnastics Downs Temple, 188.550-187.775

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 27, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team won its second-straight meet with a 188.550 – 187.775 victory over Temple Wednesday evening inside the Livingston Recreation Center.
RU entered the final rotation with a 140.650 – 140.075 edge and built on its lead with a 47.900 in the floor exercise to earn its second victory over a team from the state of Pennsylvania in as many meets. The Scarlet Knights defeated Penn last Saturday.
Rutgers took the top four spots in the floor exercise, led by junior Kiah Banfield’s (Newbury Park, Calif.) first-place 9.700 in the event. Senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) was second with a 9.600, while junior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) and freshman Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) tied for third with a 9.550.
Zito took top honors on the parallel bars with a 9.500, while freshman Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) was third with 9.300.
Sevarino paced the Scarlet Knights out to the early lead with a 9.700 to finish second on the vault and guide RU to a season-high score of 47.975 in the event. Banfield and Lewandowski tied for third with a 9.625, while Zito was fifth with a 9.525 and freshman Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) was sixth with a 9.500. Temple’s Kaity Watson placed first on the vault with a 9.750.
Trentacosti led RU on the beam with a 9.575 to tie for third overall in the event. Sophomore Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.) finished fifth with a 9.550, while junior Leigh Heinbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.) registered a season-high 9.500 to place sixth. Kathryn Ho and Katie Canning of Temple finished first and second, respectively with scores of 9.700 and 9.675.
Zito paced RU in the all-around with a 37.700, while Sevarino was right behind with a 36.900. Watson posted a score of 37.825 to finish first in the all-around.
The Scarlet Knights travel to College Park, Md. for a quad meet with the University of Maryland, West Virginia and Denver Saturday at 4:00 p.m. inside the Comcast Center.
