Rutgers Gymnastics Drops Season Opener To New Hampshire

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 9, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team was edged by New Hampshire 189.725-188.925 in its season opener Saturday afternoon in front of 527 fans at the Livingston Recreation Center.
The Scarlet Knights opened with a vault score of 47.525, paced by senior Laura Sevarino’s (Cheshire, Conn.) 9.650 to place fourth in the event. Fellow senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) was right behind in fifth with a 9.625. New Hampshire took the top three spots in the event, led by Chelsea Steinberg’s and Helena Diodati’s 9.800.
Junior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) recorded a 9.725 (just short of her career-high of 9.775) in the floor exercise to place third overall in the event and lead the Scarlet Knights. RU also got strong performances from Sevarino (9.675), who finished sixth, and freshmen Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.), who tied for seventh with a score of 9.650. Lewandowski finished ninth with a score of 9.575. The scores helped guide Rutgers to a 48.275 team score in the floor exercise. New Hampshire’s Katie Caliendo led all scorers in the event with a 9.800.
The RU freshman duo of Zito and Romano led the team on the uneven parallel bars to place fourth and fifth, respectively, with scores of 9.450 and 9.300. The Scarlet Knights posted a team score of 46.125. UNH’s Danielle Reibold won the event with a 9.725.
Freshman Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) led all Scarlet Knights with a 9.550 in her collegiate debut on the balance beam to place fourth overall in the event. Sevarino recorded a 9.475 and Romano posted a 9.400 to place sixth and seventh, respectively, as RU registered a team score of 47.000 in the event. Steinberg posted a 9.725 to capture first in the event.
Sevarino and Zito led all scorers in the all-around with matching scores of 37.800.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 15, traveling to Raleigh, N.C. for a 7:00 p.m. meet with NC State.
