Oct 12 | Women's Golf
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 12, 2010) –The RU women's golf team will host the Rutgers Invitational this Friday and Saturday, October 15-16, at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Twenty-one colleges are competing in the annual event, which was won by Boston College the past two seasons.
Rutgers senior team captain Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) will be looking to defend her individual crown at the event. Waters registered a tournament best-tying five birdies in the Invitational last season and was the event co-leader in par four scoring at plus-one. Her efforts helped the Scarlet Knights to a third place finish with a 627 (316-311) total. RU compiled 17 birdies and was a tournament-best plus-13 in par three scoring.
This year, competing teams will be the Scarlet Knights, Albany, Boston College, Boston University, Bucknell, Central Connecticut, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hampton, Hartford, Hofstra, Lehigh, Long Island, Monmouth, Sacred Heart, St. Francis, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Siena, USC-Upstate and Wagner.
The Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1961 with the construction of the present day 18-hole layout that was expertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect. The course was officially opened May 29, 1963. Today, the par-72 course can be stretched to 6,337 yards and features a course rating of 70.5 and a slope of 130.
Over the past decade, the course has undergone extensive renovations and updates, which include a modern irrigation system, the addition of several bunkers and the planting of many trees, including a host of impressive evergreens. Once a rather wide-open tract, today's Rutgers Golf Course features a host of tree-lined holes, featuring undulating greens and water that comes into play on five holes.
Tee times on Friday and Saturday will be off the first tee from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Results will be posted on the athletics web site at the conclusion of each day.
