Rutgers Gymnastics Places Third At Kent State

KENT, Ohio. (February 19, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team scored a 187.925 to place third in a tri-meet at Kent State Friday evening inside the M.A.C. Center. The host Golden Flashes won the meet with a score of 194.575, while Northern Illinois placed second with a score of 192.775. Friday’s meet was titled“Flip For The Cure” to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
Freshman Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) scored a 9.750 on the vault to place third overall in the event and lead the Scarlet Knights. Senior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) posted a score of 9.700 to place seventh in the event. Kent State’s Christine Abou-Mitri and Christina Lenny tied for first with a 9.775.
The freshman duo of Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) and Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights on the balance beam with identical scores of 9.525 to tie for ninth overall in the event. Abou-Mitri also captured the beam title with a score of 9.850.
Romano led all Scarlet Knights on the bars with a 9.400 as Kent State took the first five spots, led by Abou-Mitri’s and teammate Erin Rothrock’s 9.850 in the event.
The Golden Flashes took the top four spots in the floor exercise, once again led by About-Mitri’s 9.900 in the event. Romano was the top Scarlet Knight in the event with a score of 9.700 to tie for ninth overall. Zito was right behind with a score of 9.675 to place 11th.
Three Scarlet Knights competed in the all-around, with Romano scoring a 38.250, senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) posting a 37.425 and Zito totaling a 37.175. Abou-Mitri’s 39.375 took top honors in the all-around.
RU will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 27, hosting William & Mary, Bridgeport and Southern Connecticut State at 7 p.m. inside the Livingston Recreation Center.
