Rutgers Tennis Sweeps Georgetown, 7-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 25, 2010) – Rutgers tennis earned its first BIG EAST win of the season Thursday with a dominating 7-0 performance over Georgetown (1-3, 0-3) at the Busch Tennis Bubble.
“It was great to play at home, especially for a BIG EAST match,” said Rutgers head coach Benjamin Bucca. “The girls played aggressive, confident tennis today and defeated a much-improved Georgetown team. We are looking forward to our match against Army next Sunday.”
RU (4-3, 1-1) started off strong as all three doubles teams earned convincing wins. Junior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) andsophomore Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) extended their streak to four at No. 1 doubles, besting GU’s Lauren Greco and Victoria Sekely, 8-0.
Senior Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) and sophomore Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas) earned their first win together, upending Alexandra Landers and Alex Sebia, 8-3. In their debut match as a pair, senior Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) and sophomore Maryana Milchutsky (Holmdel, N.J.) cruised to a 8-1 victory over Caroline Kuehn and Michelle Pratt.
Zhang – with a team-best record of 5-2 – started it off at No. 1 singles, pulling out a hard-fought victory over Sekely (5-7, 6-1, 10-7). Holzberg upended Greco, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2 singles. Arlak swept Sammy Martin (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 3 spot.
At No. 4 singles, Milchutsky defeated GU’s Kuehn (6-1, 6-0). Rutgers and Georgetown went to a modified scoring system due to the impending weather for the final two matches. Freshman Michelle Greene (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) won 8-3 over Jacquie Harrison and Slatnick finished the day with a 8-4 win over GU’s Sebia.
Rutgers continues its home stand next Sunday at the Busch Tennis Bubble against Army. The match is set for 2:30 p.m.
