Rutgers Gymnastics Heads To Pittsburgh For Quad Meet Friday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 4, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team will head to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a quad meet with Iowa State, Brockport and the host Panthers Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside Fitzgerald Field House.
The Scarlet Knights have won two of their last three meets with victories over Penn and Temple. RU placed fourth in their most recent meet last Saturday in College Park, Md. against Maryland, West Virginia and Denver. Against strong competition, RU posted season highs in the vault (48.300) and on the bars (47.425) with a total team score of 190.550 at Maryland. The Scarlet Knights have scored above 190.000 in two of their last three meets.
Senior leaders Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) and Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) have played an important role early. Sevarino is averaging a 9.690 in the vault, a 9.655 in the floor exercise and a 37.685 in the all-around through five meets this season. Lewandowski is averaging a 9.625 on the vault and a 9.530 in the floor exercise this season.
The freshman trio of Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) has competed in every meet so far and has made an immediate impact. Romano has competed in the all-around in four of the five events (participated in three of the four events in the other) and is coming off a season-best score of 37.950 in the all-around at Maryland. Trentacosti has competed in every event on the bars and balance beam with a season-high score of 9.725 on the balance beam to tie for first place at Penn. Zito has competed in the all-around in all five events this season and led the Scarlet Knights in three of the four events including the all-around last time out at Maryland, pacing RU in the vault, floor exercise and on bars.
Pittsburgh has competed in three events this season, placing third against West Virginia and Kent State in the season opener and dropping decisions to Ohio State and New Hampshire. The Panthers scored a season-high 192.250 in their loss to Ohio State.
Pitt is the fifth East Atlantic Gymnastics League opponent the Scarlet Knights will face this season. RU has already competed against Maryland, West Virginia, New Hampshire and NC State.
Iowa State is ranked No. 13 nationally with a pair of nationally-ranked gymnasts in sophomore Michelle Browning (24th in the all-around with an average score of 39.062) and senior Ashley Kent (14th on the balance beam with an average score of 9.831). The Cyclones posted a season-high score of 196.000 in a loss at Missouri earlier this year.
Brockport is ranked No. 1 nationally among Division III teams with an average team score of 185.692. The Golden Eagles scored a season-high 187.225 at the Brockport Invitational this past weekend.
