
Scarlet Knights Win Hartford Hawks Invitational

WEST HARTFORD, CT (April 13, 2010) -The Rutgers women's golf team carded a 618 (310-308) to win the annual Hartford Hawks Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at Rockledge Golf Course. Freshman Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) posted a 150 (74-76) to earn her first collegiate victory, as the Scarlet Knights placed four competitors among the top seven.
"The girls have worked very hard this spring and it's starting to pay off," said Director of Golf Maura Waters-Ballard. "We are looking forward to a good showing at the upcoming BIG EAST Championship."
RU won the Invitational in convincing fashion, besting BIG EAST rival and second place St. John's (635) by 17 strokes. The top two team rounds of the 11-squad event both belonged to the Scarlet Knights.
Weddell opened the Invitational on Monday by recording a tournament-best round of 74 on the par 72, 5,801-yard course. She followed the performance with a 76 on Tuesday, which tied for the best round of the afternoon among the 64 players. Weddell finished three strokes ahead of teammate Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) and Hartford's Sarah Sideranko.
Waters,coming off a fourth place finish at the Hoya Invitational, shot 76 on Tuesday to tie Weddell's performance. The junior shot an opening round 77 to conclude play with a 153. It marked Waters' fourth top 10 finish of the 2009-10 season.
Sophomores Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Kristina Lee (Haddonfield, N.J.) also turned-in top 10 showings. Carl placed tied for fifth with a 156 (79-77), while Lee finished tied for seventh at 159 (80-79). Junior Daley Owens (Taylorsville, Utah) rounded out the Scarlet scorecard with a 175 (88-87) to place tied for 45th.
