Gerlach Places Third On Bars At USAG Collegiate

DENTON, Texas. (April 17, 2010) – Rutgers junior gymnast Erica Gerlach (Papillion, Neb.) scored a 9.625 to tie for third place on the bars and lead the Scarlet Knights in Saturday’s individual event finals at the USAG Collegiate National Championships inside Kitty Magee Arena on the campus of Texas Women’s University.
Gerlach was one of four Scarlet Knights to compete in the individual finals, joining seniors Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) and Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) and junior Leigh Heinbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.). All four Scarlet Knights were honored as All-Americans for reaching the event finals.
“I am very proud of the way everyone competed,” said head gymnastics coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton. “We competed well in the meet all weekend. We are going to miss our three seniors. They were a major part of what we accomplished this year.”
Gerlach was one of three gymnasts to share third place on the bars along with Cornell’s Maddie Pearsall and Gabriella Sanguineti. Rashonda Cannie of Texas Women’s University won the event with a score of 9.775.
Sevarino tied for ninth place with Bridgeport’s Jessica Watts in the floor exercise with a score of 9.625. Monica Mesalles of Bridgeport won the event with a score of 9.850.
Sevarino and Lewandowski tied for 10th place with a score of 9.575 on the vault. Emily Santoro of Cornell and Kristin Edwards of Texas Women’s University won the vault title with a score of 9.763.
Heinbaugh placed 10th on the balance beam with a score of 8.650. Brittany Johnson of Texas Women’s University took top honors in the event with a score of 9.800.
The USAG Collegiate Nationals marked the final competition of the 2010 season for Rutgers. It was the final meet for seniors Lewandowski, Sevarino and Prishani Seebadri (Wenonah, N.J.)
