Princeton, N.J. (Jan. 26, 2011) – The Rutgers tennis team (0-1) fell at No. 37 Princeton (1-0) by a score of 6-1 Wednesday. Freshman Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) won her first career spring victory at No. 6 singles over Caitlin Bartlett, 6-4, 6-2.
“We played against a very strong Princeton team today,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “The team as a whole played strong, spirited tennis and we just came up short. The team score was not indicative of how close each individual match was. We are motivated to practice hard and play our next match.”
In doubles action, senior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) and junior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) could not get past Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable, falling 8-3.
Holzberg took Marable to three sets, coming back from a 6-1 defeat in the first set to tie up the match, but lost (6-1, 4-6, 6-4). Junior Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) fought to three sets at No. 3 singles, beating Rachel Saiontz 0-6 in the first set, but fell (0-6, 6-2, 6-3).
The Scarlet Knights are off until Thursday, Feb. 3 when they visit Lehigh at 3 p.m.
