Oct 15 | Women's Golf
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) carded a 150 (75-75) to win the 19-team Rutgers Invitational, played Friday and Saturday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. The Scarlet Knights, who were the leaders in the clubhouse after day one, carded a 618 to place second behind tournament champion Boston College.
"I'm really proud of the team's focus the entire weekend," said Director of Golf Maura Waters-Ballard. "Kortnie played tremendous under very challenging conditions and that was great to see."
Junior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) also performed very well for the Scarlet Knights, finishing tied for second in the 97-player field with a 152 (75-77). She was even in par three scoring to lead the tournament, while also producing 25 pars.
Maxoutopoulis was plus one in par five scoring and registered 25 pars as well. The victory marked her second tournament crown in just three collegiate events. Maxoutopoulis opened her career by winning the 80-player Bison Invitational, September 11-12, by posting a 214 (70-73-71). She then carded a 221 (76-71-74) to place fourth at the 62-player Princeton Invitational, played September 24-25 at Springdale Golf Club.
Seniors Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Elisa Mateer (Marmora, N.J.) augmented a complete team effort for the Scarlet Knights, as both finished tied for 16th with 158 totals. Carl opened with a 75 before shooting 83 on Saturday. Mateer carded a 78 on Friday before finishing with an 80. Junior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) rounded out the team scorecard with a 167 (78-89) to place tied for 52nd.
BC posted a 616 to win the Rutgers Invitational, marking the Eagles third victory in Piscataway in the past four years. Boston College also won the event in 2008 and 2009.
BIG EAST rivals St. John's and Seton Hall finished third and fourth, respectively. The Red Storm carded a 630, with the Pirates turning-in a 637. Delaware finished fifth with a 641.
Rutgers returns to the links for the Lehigh Invitational, October 22-23 in Bethlehem, Pa. RESULTS
