
Rutgers Places Third at Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (October 23, 2011) - The Rutgers women's golf team finished third with a 628 (320-308) team score at the eight-team Lehigh Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday at Saucon Valley Country Club. Freshman Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) carded a 152 (77-75) to pace RU and place tied for fifth in the 42-player field.
Maxoutopoulis has placed among the top five in all four of her collegiate events. She opened her career by winning the 80-player Bison Invitational, September 11-12, by posting a 214 (70-73-71). She then carded a 221 (76-71-74) to place fourth at the 62-player Princeton Invitational, played September 24-25 at Springdale Golf Club. Last weekend (Oct. 14-15), she carded a 150 (75-75) to win the 97-player Rutgers Invitational, while helping the Scarlet Knights to a second place finish.
Senior team captain Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and juniors Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) also placed among the top 20 competitors, with Cash earning a top 10 spot. Cash posted a 156 (81-75) to place tied for 10th. Weddell finished 12th with a 157 (81-76) and Carl placed 17th with a 163 (81-82).
Senior Elisa Mateer (Marmora, N.J.) posted a 166 (82-84) to round out the team scorecard and place tied for 23rd on the par 72, 6,005-yard course.
Brown captured the team title with a 607 (309-298), four strokes better than Seton Hall. Individually, Brown's Stephanie Hsieh birdied the 18th-hole to defeat Hannah Basalone of Seton Hall in a playoff to capture medalist honors. Both players shot 147 (73-74). Michelle Chen of Brown and Alison Kruse of Seton Hall tied for third, three shots off the pace.
Rutgers, under the leadership of Director of Golf Maura Waters-Ballard, concludes the fall season at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, November 1-2, in Kapolei, Hawaii.
