Eighteen Named NACGC/W Scholar-Athletes
Oct 07 | Women's Gymnastics
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 7, 2011) – Rutgers University gymnastics placed 18 student-athletes on the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women Academic (NACGC/W) Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the organization. The list honors gymnasts for their success in the classroom during the 2010-11 academic year.
“I think that it is great that more than half of our team earned academic recognition,” said head coach Lou Levine (25 student-athletes were listed on the 2011 RU gymnastics roster). “The kids are here first for academics and this honor shows how much of a priority that is for our program. We know that they are student-athletes with student coming first.”
The NACGC/W annually awards Scholar-Athlete honors to student-athletes who finish the current academic school year with a 3.5 grade point average or higher. A total of 501 gymnasts from 62 universities made the 2011 list.
Upperclassmen that were honored include Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.), Katelynn Raymond (Burlington, N.J.), Brooke Schwamburger (Powell, Ohio), Sara Woodward (Tallahassee, Fla.), Madeline Zweibel (Bridgewater, N.J), Erica Gerlach (Papillion, Neb.), Leigh Heinbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.), Nicole Rose (Maple Shade, N.J.), Alexandra Belvis (Addison, Ill.), Melanie Brother (Crofton, Md.), Stacy Ruderman (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.).
Six underclassmen were honored, counting Madeline Meyer (Darien, Ill.), Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.), Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.), Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) and Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.).
The NACGC/W seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women’s gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
This is the second academic recognition that the program has earned this offseason, as Rutgers received a perfect score and a number one national ranking in Academic Progress Rate according to the latest multi-year APR figures released by the NCAA in the spring.
