Rutgers Tennis Splits Weekend With Louisville and Xavier

Louisville, Ky. (Feb. 27, 2011) – The Rutgers tennis team (5-3, 0-1) split the weekend, falling at Louisville, 4-3, and defeating Xavier by a score of 5-2. The Scarlet Knights rallied late, but could not overcome an early deficit against the Cardinals (6-4, 2-1) at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center and bounced back against the Musketeers (4-6) at the Western Tennis and Fitness Center.
Against Xavier, Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) took down Kelsey Kinnard and Tifanie Treece 8-5. Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) teamed up with Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas) to win a close match against Christie Pleiman and Katie Pleiman, 9-7.
Holzberg, Maryana Milchutskey (Holmdel, N.J.) and freshman Stef Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) each downed their opponents to give RU a 4-2 lead. Rookie Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) won her team-leading seventh match of the season, taking down Christie Pleiman, 6-2, 6-3.
After losing the doubles point at Louisville, Holzberg gave RU its first point with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Mandy Brown at the No. 2 spot.
Milchutskey won a tough battle with Kaysara Mandry at No. 4 singles. After closely winning the first set, 7-6 (8), Milchutskey fell 3-6 in the second set, rallying to grab the third and win the match.
Balasa grabbed a win at No. 5 singles over Amelia Harris, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Petrini was edged for the first time this season against the Cardinals, falling 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
The Scarlet Knights return to action Sunday, March 6 at home against Marquette.
