PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 19, 2011) – Despite holding a lead going into the seventh inning, Rutgers softball (18-23) dropped a 7-6 decision to Stony Brook (14-21) Tuesday at the RU Softball Complex. The second game of the doubleheader was called due to darkness.
Stony Brook got on the board first, as Lauren Maloney singled up the middle, working her way around the bases and scoring on a wild pitch.
The Scarlet Knights evened the score in the third inning, as Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) walked to lead off the inning. After stealing second, the junior advanced to third on a groundout. Sophomore Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) drove in the run with an infield single to the right side.
Rutgers took the lead in the fourth, as Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp, N.J.) used her speed to get on base with an infield single. Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) laid down a perfect bunt in front of the catcher, putting runners at first and third. After Harabedian stole second, senior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) smacked a ball back up the middle for a RBI. After Lindley walked to load the bases, Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) sent a deep fly ball to center field for the sacrifice to put the Scarlet Knights up 3-1.
RU added two runs to its total in the fifth, as Lindley extended her hit streak to 11 games with a two RBI single down the right field line. Harabedian singled up the middle and Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Craig walked to load the bases for the third baseman.
Stony Brook charged in the seventh, using seven hits and a RU error to score six runs and take a 7-5 lead. Suzanne Karath singled to left field to drive in the game-winning run.
RU answered with one run in the home half of the inning, but could not capitalize with two outs and the bases loaded. Curran smoked a ball to center, but it was right at Alyssa Hawley, ending the game.
Freshman Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) started the game for RU, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and five walks. Sophomore Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) notched the loss, allowing two runs on three hits, while recording the final two outs. SBU’s Colleen Matthes earned the win despite 17 walks.
Rutgers hosts DePaul in a BIG EAST three-game series this weekend. Friday’s doubleheader starts at noon. Saturday’s finale will serve as Senior Day for Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.), Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) and Craig and will begin at 11 a.m.
