PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 30, 2011) – Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano announced the spring football award winners for the Scarlet Knights Saturday. Rising senior defensive back Mason Robinson (Somerville, N.J.) won the Frank R. Burns Award, given to the player who displays extraordinary mental and physical toughness during spring practice. Rising junior running back De’Antwan Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) was the recipient of the Mark Mills Second Effort Award, given to the Most Improved Offensive Player. Rising senior defensive back David Rowe (Cocoa, Fla.) earned the Douglas A. Smith Award for his efforts as the Most Improved Defensive Player.
Robinson earned playing time in all 12 games in 2010 at wide receiver in addition to serving as the team’s primary punt returner. At USF last season, Robinson returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown.
Williams played in six games in 2010 and rushed for 111 yards, including 5.8 yards per carry. He has been running with the first team offense for most of the spring at running back for the Scarlet Knights.
Rowe, a two-year starter at cornerback, moved to free safety this spring and has shown a tremendous nose for the ball with several interceptions throughout spring practice. In 2010, Rowe started all 12 games and posted 38 tackles and five pass breakups.
Rutgers opens the 2011 season Thursday, Sept. 1 vs. North Carolina Central. Kickoff from Rutgers Stadium is at 7:30 p.m.
