Rutgers Wrestling Holds Scarlet vs. Black Wrestle-Offs

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Oct. 28, 2012) - The Rutgers wrestling team took to the mat in College Ave. Gym on Sunday for its annual Scarlet vs. Black Wrestle-Offs. Sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale's squad wrestled fourteen matches behind closed doors due to the New Jersey state of weather emergency.
Senior 149-pounder Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman 133-pounder Maverick Passaro (Eastport, N.Y.) led the Scarlet Knights with major decision efforts. A three-time NCAA qualifier, Mason defeated senior Luke Rigoglioso (Wayne, N.J.) by a score of 17-7, while Passaro turned away freshman Jalen Ramos (Bayville, N.J.), 11-3.
The event ended with an overtime match at 174 pounds. Freshmen Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) and Anthony Pafumi (West Orange, N.J.) battled to a 1-1 tie after three periods. After an initial sudden victory period brought no scoring, the pair exchanged escapes in the first tiebreaker period. Pafumi sealed the victory with a takedown in the second sudden victory period.
