
Scarlet Knights Place Second at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's golf team placed second with a 610 (304-306) total at the 21-team Rutgers Invitational, played Friday and Saturday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Senior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and sophomore Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) tied for 2nd in the 119-player field with 150 efforts on the 6,304-yard course.
Weddell (73-77) had a tournament-best 28 pars and was plus one in par three scoring. Maxoutopoulis was an event best minus two in par four scoring with five birdies.
Freshman Gabrielle Sacheli (Pittsford, N.Y.), playing among RU's top five for the first time in her collegiate career, also turned in a strong performance. She posted a 153 (77-76) to tie for 11th.
Freshman Melanie Chambers (Henderson, Nev.) and senior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) comprised the rest of the team scorecard. Chambers tied for 21st with a 157 (78-79), while Cash tied for 58th with a 165 (82-83).
Seton Hall captured the team title with a 603 (299-304), seven strokes better than the host Scarlet Knights. St. John's placed third with a 620 (312-308). The Red Storm boasted the individual champion in Harin Lee, who carded a two-over 146 (73-73) to win by four strokes.
The Scarlet Knights, under the leadership of head coach Maura Ballard, return to the links Oct. 20-21 at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
