Feb 19 | Women's Tennis
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (February 19, 2012) - Rutgers University women's tennis gave No. 73 Syracuse all it could handle in its BIG EAST opener, but the Orange prevailed 4-3 on Sunday at the Drumlins Tennis Club. The Scarlet Knights drop to 4-2 and 0-1 in the conference, while SU improves to 7-3 and 3-1 in the BIG EAST.
Rutgers battled tough for the doubles point with the team of senior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) winning the first position match, 8-6. The duo of sophomore Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) played valiantly, but lost 9-7 to give the Orange the advantage in doubles.
RU took three singles matches, led by a 6-4, 6-4 win by Balasa. Petrini and freshman Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) each won their match in three sets. Balasa and Petrini lead the team with 5-1 singles records.
