COLLEGE PARK, Md. (February 18, 2012) - Rutgers University gymnastics put together a team score of 191.700 to finish in third place in a quad meet in front of 1,278 fans at Comcast Center at the University of Maryland on Saturday evening. RU scored better than the College of William & Mary (191.175), but dropped to West Virginia University (194.800) and Maryland (194.550).
"We had some great individual performances tonight, but we left some points out there," said head coach Louis Levine. "We had potential to put up one of our highest scores of the season, but unfortunately it did not work out."
Rutgers (7-7, 0-6 EAGL) scored highest on the floor exercise once again (48.450), led by a 9.800 from junior Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.). Classmate Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) scored a season-high 9.775 in the event, while freshman Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.) and sophomore Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) each earned a 9.700.
Sophomore Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) led RU in the all-around with a 38.200, scoring a 9.725 on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam. Straub also competed all-around (37.325).
The Scarlet Knights return home to the Livingston Recreation Center next weekend for Alumni Night on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. for a quad meet with Bridgeport, Air Force and Eastern Michigan.
