PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 1, 2012) - Rutgers University tennis challenged No. 26 Yale University and Denver University over the weekend, but fell short in losing a pair of weekend matches. The Scarlet Knights dropped, 6-1, to the Bulldogs Friday on the road before returning to the RU Tennis Complex Sunday, losing 5-2 against the Pioneers.
"This weekend we went against two high quality teams and we played strong, aggressive tennis, but came up a little bit short," said ninth-year head coach Benjamin Bucca. "Even though we had two setbacks this weekend, we are actually confident in our play and look forward to finishing our schedule on a strong note with four BIG EAST matches."
On Sunday, freshmen Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) earned wins at the fifth and sixth positions, respectively, to provide two points for the homestanding Scarlet Knights. Judeh also teamed up with sophomore Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) to pick up a doubles win, but the Pioneers took the other two matches to grab the opening point. DU (10-8) went on to win four singles contests to seal the match.
Senior Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) prevailed in a match tiebreaker Friday against Yale (12-3), winning it 10-7 to give Rutgers a point at the third slot. The Bulldogs were the fifth ranked team the Scarlet Knights had played this season (Syracuse, DePaul, Princeton, College of Charleston).
RU (8-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) returns to BIG EAST play Wednesday, April 4 for a match against Connecticut. First serve at the RU Tennis Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
