Rutgers Softball Falls Short in Extra Innings
Mar 24 | Softball
The Rutgers softball team (14-11, 1-2 BIG EAST) came up short in nine innings of play in the final game of a three-game series with USF (24-11, 2-1) in Tampa, Fla., on Sunday. RU was handed their second loss of the series, losing 4-3. USF’s Kourtney Salvarola homered to left field to finish the game and take home the win for the Bulls.
RU got on the board quickly as Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) sent a ball deep into left field in the first inning, giving RU a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls responded in the third as Salvarola was up to bat with one out and D’Anna Devine on first. Salvarola homered to left center and sent Devine home and take a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning with Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) on second, Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) smashed a ball to left center bringing in two more runs for the Scarlet Knights. Again, Salvarola came up big for the Bulls and blasted a ball out left to tie the game at three.
Salvarola’s huge ninth inning hit would prove to be enough to give USF the victory and take a 2-1 lead on the series.
RU’s Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) took the loss and put her record at 5-1 on the year. She allowed two hits and one earned run.
