PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 9, 2013) - Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) has been named the Rutgers women's tennis MVP for the 2013 season, the team announced at its annual banquet at the Rutgers Club in New Brunswick, N.J., Wednesday.
"Gina had a fantastic singles record, playing in a very demanding No. 2 position, and a very strong doubles record," said 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca. "She was a key reason for the team having such a strong winning record. As only a freshman, her future is very bright here at Rutgers."
Li finished the season with a team-best 16-5 record in her No. 2 singles spot. The freshman posted an impressive 9-1 mark in BIG EAST action. Playing in the No. 1 doubles position, Li and junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) compiled an 11-7 overall record, finishing 6-4 in league contests.
The Hillsborough, N.J., native helped the Scarlet Knights to a 14-9 overall record, with an 8-4 mark in conference play.
"Receiving the MVP award was an honor and reflects all the hard work that was put in throughout the year," said Li. "There were so many memorable hard-fought matches and every practice, sprint and lift really paid off. None of this would have happened without the support of my teammates helping to push me to become a better player. This is just another motivator to push me to work hard for next year and hopefully have another successful season."
