
Rutgers Announces 2013-14 Women's Basketball Schedule

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 28, 2013) - The Rutgers women's basketball team announced its 2013-14 schedule on Wednesday. The 29-game slate includes seven teams that reached the 2013 NCAA Tournament, 15 homes dates at the RAC, including meetings with NCAA regional finalist Georgia, national champion Connecticut and national runner-up Louisville, and four nationally televised contests.
The Scarlet Knights have 11 non-conference dates before starting up American Athletic Conference (AAC) play. The season gets under way on Nov. 10 against Ivy League champion Princeton followed by the first road contest of the year at Northeastern on Nov. 13. RU will host LaSalle for the second straight year on Nov. 17 and travel to UMass on Nov. 20 before returning home to host Howard at the RAC on Nov. 22.
The weekend of the Thanksgiving holiday will have the Scarlet Knights squaring off in the Barclays Center Women's Invitational on the home court of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Michigan and Texas Tech will open up tournament play, followed by the Rutgers and LSU in game two on Nov, 29. The tournament continues on Nov. 30, with the losing team from each contest facing each other in game three and the winning squads from the previous day concluding the tournament in game four. LSU reached the Sweet 16 a year ago, with Michigan advancing to second round play. Texas Tech was upset in first round action by USF.
December opens up with a road contest at Davidson on Dec. 4 followed by three consecutive home games to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Scarlet Knights host Wagner on Dec. 12, Scared Heart on Dec. 15 and wrap up non-conference action with Georgia, a team that reached last year's Elite Eight, on Dec. 21.
The 18-game AAC slate begins with a road trip to USF on Dec. 28. RU will start off the new year meeting SMU, Houston and Memphis all for the first-time in school history. The first-ever meeting with Houston kicks off the new year on Jan. 4. The Scarlet Knights then travel to Cincinnati on Jan. 7 and return home to take on SMU on Jan. 11. Rutgers heads off to Memphis on Jan. 14 and comes back to Piscataway for a date with national champion UConn at the RAC on Jan. 19. RU hits the road on Jan. 22 to face UCF and on Jan. 25 to take on Temple before closing out January against national runner-up Louisville at the RAC on Jan. 28.
February opens with two home dates - Memphis on Feb. 1 and Cincinnati on Feb. 4. RU follows with a swing to Texas to face SMU on Feb. 8 and Houston on Feb. 11. The Scarlet Knights return to the RAC to host UCF on Feb. 15 followed by a trip to Louisville to meet the Cardinals on Feb. 23. February ends with a home date with Temple on Feb. 26.
March features two regular season contests before heading to the AAC Tournament at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. The Scarlet Knights travel to Gample Pavilion on Mar. 1 to meet UConn and close out the regular season at the RAC against USF on Mar. 3.
Rutgers will play in four nationally televised games, including a pair on the CBS Sports Network. RU's game with UConn on Jan. 19 at the RAC will air on ESPN2 and the Feb. 23 match-up at Louisville will be broadcast on ESPNU. The Scarlet Knights will take on Louisville on Jan. 28 at the RAC and Connecticut at Gample Pavilion on Mar. 1 in front of the CBS Sports Network cameras.
All non-televised home games will be broadcast on RVision, presented by AT&T via www.scarletknights.com.
The RU women's basketball team finished the 2012-13 campaign at 16-14 overall and welcomes back eight letterwinners along with the nation's top point guard in the incoming class. Rising junior guard/forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) returns as the Scarlet Knights' top scorer and leader on the glass at 9.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, along with BIG EAST All-Freshman Team member and rising sophomore Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.), who averaged 5.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in her first season at RU. Also suiting up for the Scarlet Knights will be Illinois transfer junior Alexis Burke (Bainbridge, Ga.), who sat last season due to NCAA transfer rules, and incoming freshman Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.), the two-time Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year and ninth overall rated recruit by ESPN Hoopgurlz.
