Swimming & Diving Hosts Sonny Werblin Invite

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 16, 2014) - Following a historic 2013-14 campaign, the Rutgers swimming and diving team prepares to make history this weekend, opening its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference. The Scarlet Knights host the annual two-day Sonny Werblin Invite at the RU Aquatics Center, welcoming St. Peter's, Southern Connecticut and Pace, in addition to various club teams.
The meet kicks off on Friday at 4:15 p.m., starting with the women's 500 freestyle. Next up will be the 200 IM followed by the 50 freestyle. The teams will compete in the 400 medley relay before moving on to the women's 3-meter dive.
Saturday's session begins at 9:00 a.m. with the 200 medley relay. The meet continues with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 200 free relay. The women's 1-meter dive wraps up the morning session. The second session of the day includes the 1650 freestyle, 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. The invite concludes with the 400 free relay.
Rutgers concluded the 2013-14 season with a third-place finish in the American Athletic Conference, after its first and only year in the league. A total of nine school records were shattered over the course of the season. RU also sent former diver, Nicole Scott, and junior swimmer Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) to the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
RU returns 14 letterwinners from the squad, in addition to seven freshmen. Three returning Scarlet Knights - Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.), Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) and Wu - sit atop the record books in their respective events.
After the Sonny Werblin Invite, Rutgers welcomes Wagner on Friday, Oct. 31 before hosting the Alumni Meet on Saturday, Nov. 1.
