NEW HAVEN, CONN. (Oct. 21, 2014) - Despite a close and intense match, juniors Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) and Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) of the Rutgers women's tennis team fell in the semifinals of the doubles draw at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship hosted by Yale University. The duo fell to their opponents from Yale by scores of 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (9)
"Congratulations to both Mariam and Gina for a fantastic tournament," said head coach Ben Bucca. "The regional championship is the time to play your best tennis, as we are competing against top opponents from the Northeast region."
Zein and Li faced off against senior Hanna Yu and junior Ree Ree Li of Yale for a chance to advance to the finals. Yale took the first set, but Rutgers responded with a win in the next. Moving to the tiebreaker, the Bulldogs were able to edge the Scarlet Knights to earn the well fought victory.
"It was great to watch both Mariam and Gina play such high-level tennis and compete so effectively," Bucca said. "Although they only came up a few points short of the victory, the entire program is very proud of their effort and their accomplishment."
Rutgers returns to action in February. The full 2015 spring schedule can be found here.
