IOWA CITY, IA - The Rutgers women's cross country team took 12th overall in their first ever Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Sunday at Ashton Cross Country course in Iowa City, Iowa.
RU, who had to battle 20 mph winds on the 6K course, was led by junior Paige Senatore (Delsea, N.J.) with a time of 21:18.4 to take 47th overall. Together, the eight Scarlet Knight entries averaged a finish time of 21:50.
"I'm really proud of the ladies' performances today," said head coach James Robinson. "The conditions were very raw and windy, but they were able to maintain their focus and obtained our team goal of running our best team average over 6K while running in a tight pack."
Michigan State, the country's top team, defended its title and captured its seventh league championship in taking home the 2014 Big Ten Championship. Following the Spartans in the standings were eighth-ranked Wisconsin in second and fourth-ranked Michigan in third.
The Scarlet Knights, meanwhile, finished ahead of Nebraska and fellow Big Ten newcomer Maryland in the standings.
"I was very pleased with the training since the Metropolitan XC Championships," added assistant coach Jan Merrill-Morin. "The team has focused well and they showed excellent determination achieving their best overall average of the season."
Following Senatore across the finish line were senior Brianna Deming (Webster, N.Y.) in 76th (21:52.5), immediately followed by freshman Megan Coakley (Tinton Falls, N.J.) in 77th (21:52.8), senior Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) in 79th (22:00.3) and freshman Alexandra Juzwiak (North Middletown, N.J.) in 82nd (22:03.5).
Rounding out the Scarlet Knight entries were sophomore Kaitlyn Bedard (Ringoes, N.J.) in 112th (22:58.9), freshman Celine Mazzi (Monroeville, N.J.) in 114th (23:05.0) and senior Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) in 121st (23:52.2).
The Big Ten Cross Country Championships will air on BTN via tape-delay at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
