Homestand opens with 60-44 win over Colgate

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 28, 2014) - The nation-longest win streak continued as the the No. 21/24 Rutgers women's basketball team defeated Colgate, 60-44, on Friday afternoon at the RAC. RU moved to 5-0 on the season and has won 11 straight games dating back to last season.

Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) recorded her fifth straight double-double, registering a career-high 18 rebounds and a game-high 17 points. Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.) also poured in 17 points of her own in the victory.

The Scarlet Knights took a 12-6 edge with 13:35 to go in the first half as five different Scarlet Knights added on points in the burst.

The Red Raiders used a 6-2 run to move ahead for its lone lead of the game at 15-14 with 10:53 to go in the half. However, the lead for Colgate was brief as the RU countered with seven unanswered points. CU attempted to stump the Scarlet Knight momentum with a three-pointer from Mariah Jones, cutting into RU's lead at 23-18 with 6:09 on the clock.

Colgate's five point deficit only grew as the half progressed as the Scarlet Knights continued to control the game. Cynthia Hernandez (Ventura, Calif.) drained a bucket from beyond the arc to give the Scarlet Knights a 12-point edge,32-20, and a double-figure advantage the rest of the way.

RU held a 38-24 lead at the half with Laney nearly recording her double-double by the intermission, registering 10 points and eight rebounds.

It was a slow start in the second half for both teams. The beginning of the second stanza endured ten total turnovers and Rutgers was unable to get onto the scoreboard until the 12:30 mark. The Scarlet Knight lead was never in doubt as they still maintained a double-figure advantage for the remainder of the afternoon.

Paige Kriftcher sunk two free throws for the Red Raiders as they trailed 49-39 with 6:42 remaining, but RU ended the game outscoring Colgate 11-5 down the stretch for the game's final margin.

Colgate was led by Josie Stockhill with nine points. Carole Harris pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds for the Red Raiders.

Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 30, welcoming Davidson to the RAC for a 1 p.m. tip.

KNIGHT NOTES
- Starting five consisted of Rachel Hollivay, Kahleah Copper, Tyler Scaife, Briyona Canty and Betnijah Laney for the second consecutive game. Rutgers improved to 5-0 for the 11th time in school history and first time since the 2011-12 season, when RU open the year with eight straight wins.


- Betnijah Laney posted her fifth straight double-double and the 20th of her career with 17 points and 18 rebounds.

- Laney hauled in a career-high 18 rebounds, surpassing her previous high of 16 in RU's win at LSU last Saturday. The senior Scarlet Knight has posted double figure rebounding numbers in 23 games of her career.

- Her 18 rebounds were the most by a Scarlet Knight since Monique Oliver grabbed 19 at Miami on Feb. 5, 2011.

- RU committed 12 turnovers, the second fewest of the season. The Scarlet Knights had 11 turnovers in the season opening win over St. Joseph's. Rutgers turned the ball over only four times in the second half. Conversely, the 18 turnovers by the Red Raiders were the fewest by an opponent this season.

- RU once again scored over 30 points in the paint. The Scarlet Knights came away with 34 points inside.

- Rachel Hollivay and Kahleah Copper each tied their season-highs with seven rebounds. For Copper, it was her second straight game with seven boards.

- Briyona Canty finished the afternoon with five assists and has dished out the ball five or more times in four of the Scarlet Knights' five games to date.
