Laney To Miss Iona Game
Dec 17 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer has announced senior forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) will sit out Saturday's game with Iona after suffering a sprained thumb on her left hand in RU's contest with Tennessee on Dec. 14.
"Betnijah suffered the sprain on the first play of the game on Sunday. It was obvious she was in pain, but she tried to play through it," said Stringer. "She'll be on the sideline when we play Iona as she heals. We'll continue to monitor Betnijah's hand and evaluate the healing process throughout the next few days before determining a time table for her return."
Entering last Sunday's game with the Lady Vols, Laney had been averaging 16.0 points and 14.8 rebounds, ranking first in the country in double-doubles and third nationally in rebounding.
After suffering the thumb injury moments into Tennessee game, Laney went on to end the contest with four points and five rebounds.
The Rutgers women's basketball team (8-2), who remained at No. 17 in the Associated Press and at No. 19 in the ESPN/USA Today Polls this week, closes out nonconference play with Iona on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. in New Rochelle, New York.
