Dec 30 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) was bestowed her fourth weekly conference honor of the season in being named to this week's Big Ten Women's Basketball Honor Roll after returning from a sprained thumb to collect her ninth double-double of the season in the Scarlet Knights' first ever Big Ten victory.
Laney, who had missed the final nonconference contest at Iona with the injury, returned to the court for 20 points and 10 rebounds in RU's 66-51 win over the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall. She went 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the floor and also added in two assists and three steals. It marked her fourth 20+ point scoring effort of the year.
On the season, Laney is tied for third nationally in double-doubles and is averaging 15.6 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. She leads the league in rebounding and is fifth in the nation in the category.
Previously, the senior forward was named the Big Ten's Player of the Week on Dec. 8 after setting the RAC rebounding record and averaging 18.0 points and 17.5 rebounds against No. 6 UNC and No. 25 Arkansas. She was also named to the Big Ten Honor Roll on Dec. 1 in pouring in 19.3 points and 13.7 rebounds in victories over Wagner, Colgate and Davidson, as well as on Nov. 24 in wins over Northeastern and LSU that saw her average 12.0 points and 14.5 rebounds per contest.
The Rutgers women's basketball team (10-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten), ranked at No. 16 in this week's Associated Press Poll, wraps up a three-game roadstand at Ohio State on New Year's Day. The game is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on BTN Plus.
