Swimming and Diving Stuns Boston University on the Road

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 6, 2014) - In its first road test of the season, the Rutgers swimming and diving team defeated Boston University, 191-108, on Saturday afternoon at Yale University. The Scarlet Knights recorded 13 first-place finishes out of 16 events, in addition to eight second-place finishes and eight third-place results.
"I was very happy with the way we came together as a team today and how we competed as a whole," said head coach Phil Spiniello.
The divers started off the meet for the Scarlet Knights, sweeping the leaderboard for the 1-meter dive along with the top two spots of 3-meter dive. In the 1-meter dive, freshman Addison Walkowiak (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) led the way with a score of 257.50, followed by sophomore Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.) in second (254.15) and freshman Morgan Engel (Mound, Minn.) in third (250.10). Moving into the 3-meter dive, Walkowiak earned another first-place finish (308.10) as Black secured second (254.20) in the event.
RU dominated in the 100 breaststroke as the Scarlet Knights swept the top three spots of the event. Senior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) hit the wall first at 1:04.02, followed by freshman Larissa Neilan (Orange, Va.) and sophomore Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.) in second and third, respectively.
The Scarlet also swept the 200 individual medley as junior Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) led the way with a field-best time of 2:05.38. Leberfinger finished second touching the wall at 2:09.40, while Neilan came in third at 2:13.49.
In the 200 medley relay, RU claimed the top spots as the team comprised of juniors Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) and Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Ind.), Leberfinger and Pfaff finished first with a time of 1:45.68. The group of senior Lindsay Gibson-Brokop (Edmonton, AB, Canada), freshman Karli Rymer (Long Branch, N.J.), sophomore Meghan Kiely (Mountian Lakes, N.J.) and Neilan finished second.
Overall, a total of 10 different Scarlet Knights contributed with at least a top-three placing.
BU was able to snatch the first touch in three events, including the 500 freestyle and 1000 freestyle, along with the 400 freestyle relay, but it was not enough to top RU.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 in a tri-meet at Miami (Fla.). Rutgers will compete against host Miami in addition to Tulane.
