COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 3, 2013) - The Rutgers wrestling team's own Frank Molinaro took first place at 65 KG in MFS at the 2014 Dave Schultz Memorial International on Jan. 31 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The RU assistant coach went 4-0 to take the crown at 65 KG, becoming one of three Americans to take first in freestyle competition.
Molinaro opened his part of the bracket with a pair of byes before facing Feng Gao of China. Molinaro took a 10-8 decision over Gao in his opening bout before advancing past Russia's Alibegadzh Emeev due to injury and topping Jason Chamberlain, 3-1.
The three victories set Molinaro up in the finals against Puerto Rico's Franklin Gomez - a matchup of former NCAA Champions out of the Big Ten. Molinaro won an NCAA Championship for Penn State at 149 pounds in 2012, while Gomez was the 133-pound champion in 2009 while at Michigan State.
The match ended at 1-1, but Molinaro scored last after Gomez went scoreless after being put on the shot clock for passivity.
