RVISION: Women's Basketball Honored By NJ Senate
TRENTON, N.J. (June 12, 2014) -- The members of the 2013-14 Rutgers women's basketball team, winners of the WNIT Tournament, were honored Thursday afternoon by the New Jersey State Senate at the State House in Trenton.
Senator Raymond Lesniak (D-Union), a 1971 graduate of Rutgers College, set forth a resolution on recognizing the Scarlet Knights for their championships run.
"It is an honor to be recognized today as our entire team takes great pride in representing the great state of New Jersey," said head coach C. Vivian Stringer after the team was presented with a framed proclamation on the senate floor. "Winning the WNIT will certainly help propel us forward as we enter the Big Ten. I know each and every one of our young ladies was grateful for the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work by the senate and we certainly hope we will be back again celebrating a national championship."
The Scarlet Knights finished their championship season at 28-9 overall, the most victories by the women's basketball team since the 2004-2005 season. RU won the final three games of the WNIT on the road, including a 56-54 victory over UTEP in front of 12,222 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. The Scarlet Knight roster featured four juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen during the championship run, all whom return for the upcoming season as Rutgers heads into its first year in the Big Ten.
