PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 10, 2014) – Rutgers senior offensive lineman Kaleb Johnson (Jacksonville, Fla.) was one of 64 players named to the 2014 Outland Trophy Watch :ist, the Football Writers Association of America announced today. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team.
The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 26-man first team and eventually the Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
Johnson started all 13 games at left guard last season for the Scarlet Knights and has started the last 37 games since freshman season. He decided to forego the NFL Draft and return for senior season in January.
An Outland Trophy Watch List selection in 2013, Johnson earned FWAA Freshman All-America honors as a true freshman in 2011.
Johnson is one of five returning starters on Rutgers’ offensive line in 2014. He is the third Scarlet Knight to be named to a preseason watch list, joining Betim Bujari (Rimington) and Tyler Kroft (John Mackey).
Rutgers opens the season Thursday, August 28 in Seattle against Washington State on Fox Sports One (10 p.m.). Season tickets are still available by calling 1-866-445-GORU or visit ScarletKnights.com
