Rutgers Women's Soccer Newcomer Series: GK Bree Benedict

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 21, 2014) - In advance of the 2014 season, ScarletKnights.com will bring you brief Q&As with all six newcomers of the Rutgers women's soccer team. This installment features junior goalkeeper Bree Benedict (Jamison, Pa.), who transferred to Rutgers in the offseason from Penn State-Abington.

Position: GK
Prior to Rutgers: Played two years of women's soccer at Penn State-Abington … helped guide the squad to a 2011 North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship … named first team all-league and conference tournament MVP … a three-year varsity starter in goal at CB West HS … named first team all-league in her senior season, recording 19 shutouts while not allowing a goal in league play … led the squad to 2010 Continental Conference Championship … captain of PA Rush 93F under coach Seth Friedman.
Personal: Daughter of Robert and Karen Benedict … has three siblings, Jake, Jordan and Zech … intends to major in economics and business administration … born on March 3, 1993.
Scarletknights.com: Why did you choose Rutgers?
Bree Benedict: I wanted to come play soccer at Rutgers because I came to one of the clinics in the winter. I took a tour of campus and played in the bubble and it was just an experience I hadn't had yet. It was something I fell in love with wanted to be a part of.
SK.com: What have your impressions been of your first preseason camp?
BB: It was great and a lot of work, but I definitely think it was very professional and very well organized compared to other places that I've been. It's really exciting to be a part of this program and get going for the season now.
SK.com: When did you first start playing soccer?
BB: I think I started playing soccer when I was like four or five so I've been playing for a long time. I used to be a center mid and then when I was nine or 10 I was put in goal and I never got to come out.
SK.com: What is your favorite part about playing soccer?
BB: My favorite part is celebrating with my teammates after a big win.
SK.com: From a fan perspective, do you have a favorite player, club and national team that you root for?
BB: My favorite player is Hope Solo and my favorite club team is Manchester United, so I try to watch them as much as I can. Nationally I root for the U.S. for sure.
SK.com: Are you looking forward to your first year in school?
BB: I definitely think it's going to be a little more challenging than where I was so I'm excited for that. I'm excited to learn and take my economics major and graduate with it.
