
Women's Tennis Opens Season at the Brown Invitational

PISCATAWY, N.J. (Sept. 22, 2014) - The Rutgers women's tennis team opened the competitive leg of its fall campaign, traveling to the Brown Invitational on Friday, Sept. 19. In addition to solid performances from the Scarlet Knights, juniors Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) highlighted the weekend with a third-place finish in the Bear Doubles Flight event.
"The Brown Invitational was a great opportunity to showcase the team's talent at the start of the fall season," said assistant coach Hilary Ritchie. "At this point in the season, the squad showed a lot of mental toughness with good match-play and strategy. We are excited about what we see with the team and we are going to continue to build for our upcoming competitions."
Li and Zien grabbed a third place finish in the Bear Doubles Flight, with an overall record of 3-1. The duo advanced to the semi-finals of the event, dropping the match to Brown opponents, Hannah Camhi and Dayna Lord. Camhi and Lord eventually went on to secure first place in the flight. In the match for third place, the Scarlet Knights defeated Boston University opponents, Johanna Hyoty and Kim McCallum, by a score of 8-6.
Senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and freshman Lee Levy (Haifa, Israel) also teamed up for doubles play, competing in the Eagle Doubles Flight. After dropping their first match, the duo registered two straight wins to capture a victory in the consolation match of the event.
In singles play, Zein concluded the weekend with an overall record of 2-1, winning the consolation of the White Draw. The junior dropped her first match to Anna Woosley of UMass, who went on take first in the event. Following the loss, Zein recorded wins in her next two matches to secure her victory in the consolation round.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Thursday, Oct. 2 as host to ASA College.The match is set for 2 p.m.
