PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In front of a record crowd of 5,420 fans Friday night at the RAC, the No. 23 Rutgers wrestling team suffered a 27-9 defeat against No. 1 Iowa in its first-ever Big Ten Conference match.
Play-by-Play
The loss was the first of the season for Rutgers (9-1, 0-1 Big Ten), but despite the defeat, three Scarlet Knights stood out in the BTN-televised match.
Sophomore 133-pounder Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) earned RU's first bout victory in a Big Ten Conference match by a 10-3 score against Hawkeye Phillip Laux.
In the next bout at 141 pounds, No. 11/7/11 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) continued a strong inaugural campaign for the Scarlet Knights, upsetting No. 6/5/8 Josh Dziewa, 3-1.
With the match tied, 1-1, late in the third period, Ashnault and Dziewa got into a scramble on the top edge of the mat. The result left Dziewa on his back and Ashnault over top for a two-point takedown with two seconds left, capping a 3-1 win at the buzzer that put Rutgers ahead, 6-4. The win improved Ashnault to 14-2 this season.
From there the Hawkeyes distanced themselves with wins at 149-174, which included a pair of tough losses for No. 13/12/13 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) against Mike Kelly and No. NR/20/16 Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) against No. 2/2/2 Mike Evans.
Redshirt junior 197-pounder Andrew Campolattano (Bound Brook, N.J.) ended the losing slide by registering his first win as a Scarlet Knight, 8-5, against Kris Kladdprodt.
The win was his first since March 10, 2013 at the Big Ten Conference Championships against Max Huntly (Michigan) as a member of Ohio State. He is now 41-26 for his collegiate career.
At heavyweight No. 3/3/3 Bobby Telford (Iowa) rode No. 9/NR/12 Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) out for much of the match on his way to a 6-2 win. The loss was Smith's first of the season, dropping him to 8-1.
Rutgers returns to the mat on the road in Champaign, Ill., on Friday, Jan. 9 against No. 13 Illinois. From there the Scarlet Knights will return to the RAC to take on No. 2 Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 11.
