Women's Golf Set to Host Annual Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The RU women's golf team will host the annual Rutgers Invitational this Friday and Saturday, October 16-17, at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Ten colleges are competing in the 54-hole event, with 36 to be played on day one and 18 on day two.
This year, the Scarlet Knights welcome Brown, Dartmouth, Delaware, Fairleigh Dickinson, James Madison, Long Island, Siena, St. John's and Xavier.
Long Island will be looking to defend its team title after besting RU by a single stroke last year.
The Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1894, when four men and four women organized the New Brunswick Golf Club. One of the earliest clubs in the United States, it was among the first members of the United States Golf Association. In 1933, the Depression led to the bankruptcy of the club, which was purchased in 1935 by Rutgers for $15,000.
A new era was launched in 1961 with the construction of an 18-hole course. Expertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect, the course was officially opened May 29, 1963. Over 6,041 yards in length, the picturesque, tree-lined, PGA sanctioned course is a par 72 and offers a challenging layout with four teeing areas per hole. Highlights include narrow fairways, fast greens, and water hazards on nine holes. A course layout can be viewed here.
Awards will be given this weekend to the winner and the runner-up for the team and individual competition. If there is a tie for the team championship, it will be decided by the fifth player's score from the final round. If a tie still exists, the fifth player's total score from all three rounds will be used.
Ties for individual medalist will be decided by a scorecard playoff using the final round, beginning on the 18th hole and moving backwards. Ties for runner-up will be determined by a scorecard playoff using the same format.
Tee times on Friday begin at 7:45 a.m. Results will be posted on the athletics web site and here at the conclusion of each round.
