PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Women's basketball forward Alexis Burke (Bainbridge, Ga.) was not granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA for the 2015-16 season it was announced on Tuesday by head coach C. Vivian Stringer. Burke will remain with the squad in a graduate assistant manager role.
"Obviously we are disappointed with the decision," said Stringer. "However we are very happy that Alexis will be able to contribute to the team in her role as a graduate assistant manager. She will be able to remain a leader within our program and share her basketball knowledge with her teammates all while working towards obtaining her master's degree."
Burke arrived "On The Banks" after spending her first two seasons at Illinois. After redshirting the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules, Burke helped the Rutgers women's basketball team to the 2014 WNIT title averaging 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. She missed RU's first year in the Big Ten in 2014-15 after tearing her ACL prior to the start of the season.
"I think it's a great situation for me. Even though I won't get to play, I'll be able to learn from Coach Stringer. Coach Stringer is nationally known and everyone wants to know her style of play and I get to learn even more from her," said Burke. "I am thankful to be in the situation that I get to be able to finish my master's degree and get to be around this great group of ladies to help them learn and grow and be a part of it."
The Rutgers women's basketball team returns eight letterwiners from last year's squad including Second Team All-Big Ten selection, senior forward Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.) (16.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg), and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honoree, junior guard Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.) (14.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg). The Scarlet Knights also welcome five newcomers to the court for the 2015-16, including redshirt freshman Ashli Jeune (Westampton, N.J.).
