ROSEMONT, ILL. (Dec. 1, 2015) - Senior defensive specialist Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) of the Rutgers women's volleyball team has earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, the league announced Tuesday. Schroeter earns the award for the second consecutive season, after first picking up the accolade in 2014.
The athletes chosen for the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, in addition to demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
"Ali is the epitome of an all-around student-athlete," said head coach CJ Werneke. "She excels at all levels from academics to athletics. She is really selfless and is always all about the program as a whole. Overall, she encompasses exactly what this award stands for."
Schroeter concluded her career at Rutgers as the program's all-time career digs leader, totaling 1,615 digs over her four years "On the Banks." The defensive specialist also owns first and second-place on the single season digs chart with 544 digs in 2013 and 468 digs in 2014. Her mark of 370 this year also ranks at seventh on the list. Schroeter ended the season ranked 10th in the Big Ten with 3.39 digs per set.
Off the court, the two-time team captain has dedicated her time and service to the local community. Along with the team's visit to the Ronald McDonald House, Schroeter assisted the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Hurricane Sandy cleanup and the organization's "Feed the Need" initiative, to name a few. Schroeter has also used her leadership to bring her teammates along to various community services; most recently orchestrating a trip to Urban Impact at Zarephath Church.
The journalism and media studies major has been named a three-time All-Academic Team member - 2012 All-Academic BIG EAST, 2013 All-Academic American Athletic and 2014 All-Academic Big Ten. Last season, Schroeter received the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award, which is bestowed upon student-athletes who achieved a 3.7 GPA or higher for the previous academic year.
