Laney Named MBWA Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. The award encompasses nominees from the 73 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
Laney collected a pair of double-doubles and averaged 16.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in leading the Scarlet Knights to victories over No. 19/18 Nebraska and Michigan last week.
In a 46-43 victory over the nationally-ranked Cornhuskers last Thursday, Laney poured in 16 points, which included a perfect 6-of-6 performance from the line, and hauled in 11 rebounds.
In Sunday's 57-50 win at Michigan, Laney captured another double-double with 17 points and 10 boards, along with a career-tying seven assists. She shot 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the field and also added in two steals.
Laney also played every minute of both contests.
On the season, Laney has notched 16 double-doubles, surpassing last year's total of 15. She is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. In conference games, she is pouring in 16.3 points and hauling in 10.8 rebounds per contest.
Laney was also awarded Big Ten Player of the Week honors for her performance on Monday, her sixth weekly award from the Big Ten this season and her third Big Ten Player of the Week honor.
This is the second MBWA weekly honor for Laney. She was the MBWA Player of the Week in December after she averaged 18.0 points, 17.5 rebounds and shot 51.7% from the field in a pair of top 25 contests with then-No. 25 Arkansas and then-No. 6 North Carolina. Against the Tar Heels, Laney had poured in 24 points and hauled in a RAC record 24 rebounds in the double overtime contest.
The Rutgers women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday night against No. 5 Maryland at 9 p.m. The game will air on BTN with Frank Hanrahan and Christy Winters-Scott on the call.
