ATHENS, Ohio - It was a banner weekend for senior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) as she captured the Big Ten title in the 200m, was the runner-up in the long jump and took third in the 60m, setting two school records and three personal bests, at the 2015 Big Ten Indoor
Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute.
"The Big Ten is an outstanding conference with world and national class student-athletes in every event. We were able to deliver a number of personal and seasonal bests, school records and produce a Big Ten Champion!," said head coach James Robinson. " Gabrielle Farquharson had an amazing weekend of competition. We knew that she had the opportunity to have an outstanding weekend and it was fantastic to be able to witness such greatness. Gabrielle is an extremely dedicated and hard-working person. She is an absolute pleasure to coach and I look forward to more memorable accomplishments."
Farquharson reset the Rutgers indoor 200m record for the third time this season in capturing the Big Ten crown. She crossed the finish line in a time of 23.50, with a .06 margin of victory and bettering her previous record from the Valentine's Day Invitational by .12 seconds. Her time is currently 21st nationally.
In the long jump, Farquharson missed out on the title by just .01m. Leaping to a distance of 6.36m (20' 10 ½") on her final attempt, the senior Scarlet Knight landed in second place. She surpassed her previous PR of 6.31m set at the Metro Team Challenge and Penn State Invitational in January. Her jump places her 13th in the country.
Farquharson picked up bronze in the 60m setting another school benchmark. Clocking in at 7.38, she was only .02 behind the Big Ten champion and .002 second behind the runner-up. She bested the previous Rutgers record of 7.41 by Shameka Marshall at the ECAC Championships in 2006.
The Scarlet Knights finished 12th overall as Ohio State captured the 2015 Big Ten indoor team title. In all, RU posted eight ECAC qualifying marks.
BTN will air tape-delayed coverage of the Big Ten Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at 10:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, March 8.
