BRONX, N.Y. - The Rutgers women's indoor track and field team placed second at the 2015 Metropolitan Indoor Championship as Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) won a trio of events - 60m, 200m and long jump, Paige Senatore (Delsea, N.J.) set a new PR in winning the 5000m and Kaprice James (Roselle, N.J.) took home the 60m hurdle title.
St. John's claimed the Metropolitan Championship title with 168 points followed by Rutgers with 154. Fordham took third with 85 points. In all, the Scarlet Knights earned seven ECAC qualifying marks.
"The team did a great job of competing today. We had point scoring contributions from every area," said head coach James Robinson. "On paper, St. John's was supposed to beat us handily, but that's why it's important who shows up to compete in that meet day. Rutgers showed up and now we need to take these results and get even better."
Farquharson won the 60m title in a time of 7.64 and took first in the 200m in 24.17. Bria Saunders (Parsippany, N.J.) followed Farquharson across the finish line the 200m in 24.57, a new PR, besting her previous time of 24.88 captured at the Metro Team Challenge earlier this season.
Farquharson also collected first in the long jump for the fourth straight time this season. The senior Scarlet Knight reached a distance of 6.03m (19' 9 ½").
Senatore posted a new personal best in the 5000m obliterating her previous time of 17:48.15 as the runner-up at last year's championships. This season, she takes home the title with a finish of 17:27.37.
James also added in a first place finish for the Scarlet Knights in winning the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.83.
Also earning an ECAC qualifying time was Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) in the 500m logging a time of 1:14.91 to take third. Additionally, Brianna Deming (Webster, N.Y.) took second in the 3000m with her time of 10:17.85.
The Rutgers women's indoor track and field team is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Valentine's Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts.
