PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 11, 2015) -- In front of one of the largest crowds in recent years, the Rutgers softball team faced No. 4 Michigan in a Saturday afternoon contest at the RU Softball Complex. The Scarlet Knights were topped by the Wolverines, 16-3, in the middle game of the three-set series.
Rutgers falls to a record of 20-11 overall and 7-4 in Big Ten play, while Michigan improved to a record of 36-6 overall and 9-2 in the league.
Despite the loss, juniors Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) and Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) , sophomore Bridget Carr (Pequannock, N.J.) and freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) each recorded hits on the day. Hall registered the third home run of her career and notched two runs in the contest.
After Michigan had established a 5-0 lead, the Scarlet Knights cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second. Slowinski ignited the offense with lead-off single to open the inning. Carr then sent Slowinski home with a base hit of her own, followed by another RBI single from Huang to bring the score to 5-2.
Junior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) worked a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third to keep it a three-run contest. The Wolverines responded with eight runs on eight hits in the following frame, generating a 13-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hall crushed a homer to left center, marking the third long ball of her career. However, it was not enough to build an offensive momentum for RU.
The Scarlet Knights and the Wolverines wrap up the series on Sunday morning at the RU Softball Complex. The first pitch has been re-set to an earlier time of 11:30 a.m.
