SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (April 14, 2015) -- The Rutgers softball team dominated in-state rival Seton Hall in a six-inning, 12-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field. The Scarlet Knights improved to an overall record of 21-12, while the Pirates fell to a mark of 17-21.
Senior Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.) led the squad with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including two RBIs, a homer and four runs. Classmate Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) added a home run of her own in the win, along with two RBIs. Juniors Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) and Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) contributed two hits and three runs each.
Rutgers took control of the contest early, jumping to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning via three hits from Howard, Whitley and Slowinski. Senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) maintained the edge in the bottom half of the frame. Despite allowing a single hit, the lefty retired the final batter at the plate to strand the runner on.
Landrith continued her dominance in the circle, striking out three Pirates in a row in the following inning to keep the RU lead at 3-0.
Following a base hit from Howard, senior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) smashed her 11th home run of the year to extend RU's lead to 5-0 in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, Seton Hall added its first run of the day via a homer from Alexis Walkden. However, Landrith retired two consecutive batters at the plate to close the frame with a 5-1 lead in tact.
The Scarlet Knights responded with a three-running in the opening half of the fifth. Back-to-back RBI singles from Bates and Whitley plated the first two runs. Then, with the bases loaded, junior Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to send Whitley across.
SHU went on to add one more in their half of the inning. However, RU kept its momentum rolling.
After Huang led off the sixth with a base hit, Howard crushed her third homer of the year to extend Rutgers' advantage to 10-2. Another series of back-to-back RBI singles, this time from freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) and sophomore Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.), put RU up 12-2.
Sophomore Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.) worked a 1-2-3 inning to close the door on the Pirates after six innings of play.
Landrith registered the win for the Scarlet Knights, improving to a record of 12-7 on the season.
Up next, Rutgers welcomes Villanova for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at the RU Softball Complex
