COLUMBUS, OHIO (April 17, 2015) -- Opening its weekend series, the Rutgers softball team was edged Ohio State, 4-3, on Friday night at Buckeye Field.

RU dropped to an overall record of 23-13 and a 7-6 mark in conference play, while OSU improved to 23-18 overall and 7-8 in the conference.

After the Scarlet Knights loaded the bases in the top of the second, freshman Sierra Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) drove a hit up the middle, sending junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) home. Sophomore Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) then added a run on a wild pitch to extend the RU lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Maddy McIntyre got the Buckeyes on the board with a home run to left field. However, senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) would allow no more, retiring the next three batters at the plate to keep RU in front, 2-1.

Following another scoreless inning from Landrith, junior Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) opened the top of the sixth with a homer to extend RU's edge to 3-1.

The Buckeyes countered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame as Caitlin Conrad led things off with a home run of her own. Taylor Watkins contributed a sacrifice fly to tie the game, while Anna Kirk notched an RBI single to claim the lead for OSU and, ultimately, the win.

Despite four scoreless innings of work, Landrith suffered the loss for RU, moving to an overall record of 13-8 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday, RU and OSU will now compete in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

KNIGHT NOTES

Liz Adams registered her third collegiate home run in the contest.
Sierra Maddox got the nod for her ninth career start, registering two hits and one RBI.
Rutgers fell for only the second time in the opening contest of a Big Ten series. RU also fell to No. 4 Michigan in the opening contest. The Scarlet Knights took the first game in the three-game sets against Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for RU.
