PRINCETON, N.J. - Joseph Velez (Providence, R.I.) set the school record in the hammer for a third time this season, while Jermaine Griffith (Hamilton, N.J.) won the 400m and Christopher Mirabelli (Lumberton, N.J.) captured the javelin title at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Weaver Stadium this weekend.
Velez threw for 64.14m (210' 5") for third place resetting the Scarlet Knight benchmark again after already setting the record the USF Bulls Invitational and Colonial Relays earlier this season. His throw puts his name 22nd nationally and 14th in the East Region. Velez bettered his previous best of 63.82m (209' 4").
The Scarlet Knights went 1-2 in the 400m led by Griffith's first place finish. Griffith took the top spot in the event with an IC4A qualifying time and personal best of 47.15, while D'Andre Jordan (Brooklyn, N.J.) was the runner-up in an IC4A qualifying and season-best time of 47.37.
RU also went 1-2 in the javelin. Mirabelli won the event with a throw of 69.84m (229' 2"), a mark not only a PR, but one that places his name 11th in the East Region. Teammate Josh Suttmeier (Pattenburg, N.J.) took second at an IC4A qualifying distance of 67.22m (220' 6").
Kyle Holder (Randolph, N.J.) raced to an IC4A qualifying time in the 400m hurdles. He took fourth in a time of 53.08.
Both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams also posted IC4A qualifying marks. The 4x100m relay team of Rajee Dunbar (Arlington, Va.), Jordan Jimerson (Edison, N.J.), Jordan and Griffith placed third, but had the top collegiate time of 42.01. The 4x400m relay squad, featuring same quartet, recorded a season-best time of 3:11.68.
In other field events, Michael Stafford (Neptune, N.J.) placed fourth in the high jump with a season-best 1.99m (6' 6 ¼"), Nicholas Patterson (Boonton, N.J.) took fifth in the pole vault clearing4.70m (15' 5")and Tyrell Judson (Piscataway, N.J.) finished in 10th in the triple jump at a distance of 13.34m (43' 9 ¼").
The Rutgers men's outdoor track and field team returns to action at the prestigious Penn Relays held at Franklin Field on April 23-25.
